This page provides official travel information about Tsunami Matsuri and nearby attractions in the Kansai region of Japan.
In 1854 a tsunami struck Hiro village in Wakayama Prefecture, when Mr. Goryo Hamaguchi saved many lives of his fellow villagers. The festival is to ease the soul of the victims and to express appreciation for Mr. Hamaguchi who also built a large seawall at his own expense after the tsunami.
