The peaks of Katsuragi Mountain tower on the border of Wakayama-Osaka-Nara prefectures. This place, where Monk En-no-Gyoja who is said to be the founder of Shugendo trained for the first time, is known as one of the "two sacred places of Shugendo", along with the world heritage site of Yoshino/Omine. There are 28 sutra mounds in this area where Monk En-no-Gyoja buried his sutras one by one, and even now, Shugendo practitioners visit the sutra mounds and the surrounding temples and shrines, waterfalls, and megaliths. This Buddhist religious practice has always had a deep connection with the people living in this area. "Katsuragi Shugen" is a sacred place that the practitioners and local people have cherished for a long time - the history of Shugendo starts from here.
