The Naumann elephant was an elephant that lived on the Japanese archipelago until 20,000 years ago. Fossilized footprints and teeth of the Naumann elephant have been found in underground strata of the Osaka Plain. Furthermore, stone tools made by humans have been discovered in strata dating back over 30,000 years. Humans likely lived in the Osaka Plain at that time, hunting herds of Naumann elephants.
