This rectangle-shaped tumulus was built in the early 7th century, and the horizontal stone chamber-which is made from around 30 giant rocks-is one of Japan’s largest. It is called Ishibutai, meaning ‟stone stage,” because the top of the ceiling stone, which has appeared through the loss of topsoil, is flat like a stage. Nearby is the Takamatsuzuka Tumulus, famous for its brilliant murals.
