Trace fossils of currents and the tracks of large mammals have been among the finds discovered here amid the river and lake sediment (comprising alternating layers of conglomerate, sandstone and mudstone) that filled in a depression created along the border where the Japanese archipelago separated from mainland Asia in the Sea of Japan's early period of expansion.
