Omiwa Shrine

Omiwa Shrine

[A shrine dedicated to Mt. Miwa, the deity of nation-building]
As the entire mountain to the southeastern side the shrine is the object of worship, this shrine has no main hall for enshrinement. The outer shrine was reconstructed in the Edo Period by Tokugawa Ietsuna. As a diety of nation-building, it is believed that the mountain protects all aspects of human life and represents agricultural, industrial and commercial development, protection against evil from the cardinal directions, curing of diseases, sake brewing, drug manufacturing, incantations to ward off evil, traffic, voyages and matchmaking. The sugidama (cedar ball) that hangs under the eaves of sake breweries is believed to have been originally made from the cedar trees of Mt. Miwa.
