Shinden Puppet Theater Drama Aioi Bunraku
1 Feb 2022
A village committed to keep alive the artistry of a Living National Treasure
This puppet theater drama has been passed down since the early Meiji period. After an Osaka Bunrakuza performance in 1951, they were privileged to study under Kiritake Monjuro, a Living National Treasure puppeteer, who granted the name Aioi Bunraku. In 2000, the village of Shinden, with seventeen households and a population of fifty, formed an NPO called "Shinden Village Planning Committee" to work on its preservation and transmission.
