This page provides official travel information about Genbudo Cave and nearby attractions in the Kansai region of Japan.
【Description】
An eruption formed the massive basalt outcrop here 1.6 million years ago. When the lava cooled, cracks formed to create the beautiful columnar jointing. Four other caves are named after guardians of the cardinal directions in Chinese geomancy: the Azure Dragon, the White Tiger, the Northern Vermillion Bird and the Southern Vermillion Bird. Professor Motonori Matsuyama, who first figured out that the Earth's magnetic pole has reversed polarity in the planet's past, conducted research here that led to his discovery, making the cave a site of international significance.
