Hiwasa Chelonian Museum Caretta

Hiwasa Chelonian Museum Caretta

Visitors to this fascinating museum—named after the scientific term for loggerhead sea turtles—can have fun learning about the evolution and ecology of turtles while watching them swim about. Every year between May and August, loggerhead turtles come to lay eggs opposite the museum along the Ohama coast, as well as in the south of the prefecture. Although they usually lay eggs at night, lucky visitors might just be able to view these thrilling scenes during the day. Inside the museum are stuffed sea turtles from around the world and easy-to-understand descriptions of their evolution. There is also a tank where visitors can observe sea turtles and learn about their way of life.
