Something that has been connected to the lives of Japanese people since long ago is the mysterious blue colour from the indigo plant. The river basin of the Yoshino River, which flows magnificently into the northern part of Tokushima Prefecture, is Japan's largest source of indigo dye. The scenery of the region is resplendent with stone walls visible in the flat fields, the large residences of wealthy famers enclosed in white walls, and the Wakimachi Town area with its gorgeous house decorations referred to as “Udatsu.” In the Awa Odori Festival’s rhythm and in every facet of the town you can see the former glory of the indigo merchants who once, long ago, shouldered the circulation of the indigo dye and set out for the entire country. In this region, traditional techniques are still employed in the production of indigo dye, and the vibrant colours continue to attract people to this day.
